The series consists of papers of William Henry Gregory from 1817-1900. The bulk of the series consists of incoming (1841-1892) and outgoing (1833-1892) correspondence. The incoming correspondence reflects Gregory's terms in Parliament, the American Civil War, his tenure as Governor-General of Ceylon, and his years in retirement. Most of the correspondence is official and addresses such political matters as land tenure, the Catholic Church in Ireland, and foreign affairs, in particular with Greece and the Balkans. Gregory's correspondence to his wife is found in Lady Gregory's papers. Other prominent correspondents include Frederic William Burton, Julia Margaret Pattle Cameron, Ulick John De-Burgh (Marquis of Clanricarde), Bishop John Derry, Robert Dillon (Baron Clonbrock), Bishop Patrick Duggan, Sir Austin Henry Layard, Francis Charles Lawley, Ambrose Dudley Mann, James Murray Mason, William Porcher Miles, Henry Howard Molyneax (Earl of Carnarvon), Robert Peel, and Hercules Robinson (Baron Rosmead). The outgoing correspondence, the bulk of which is from 1890-1892, is of a more personal nature and include letters to his grandfather William Gregory and his mother Elizabeth O'Hara Gregory. Another subseries consists of the writings of Gregory including published works (poetry from Harrow, speeches, and pamphlets) as well as manuscripts. The collection also contains some financial and personal papers; printed materials such as newspaper clippings and pamphlets; and three scrapbooks. One scrapbook contains photographs and drawings of Ceylon and two others contain clippings on the American Civil War, the British occupation of Egypt, and the British Museum.
